The Things They Carried

Abstract

• This story is about stories that are from Vietnam soldiers. First story is about a guy named Jimmy Cross, and he fell in love with a girl name Martha. Throughout the story Jimmy explains about things he carries in the war, but seems to always start talking about Martha again. He carries other memories around with him, and will always have Martha in his heart.

Analysis

• This story can be looked at from a formalism criticism. The story tells about the things the vietnam soldiers are carrying through out the war. He always resorts back to talking about his love for Martha and other memories he has had. The story was slightly hard to understand because I didn't understand military terms as much as other people do. I also could see it from a psychological criticism because he can't seem to get Martha out of his head. She is haunting his brain, and no matter what he does her will always think of Martha.
